Hospital, Links & Sven
Firstly, hospital went okay. I'm a little worn down, tired and sore but don't feel too bad. I was in an out of theatre within an hour so the procedure went pretty quick. I can't walk without crutches now but that'll improve over time. As you can imagine this isn't something fun to talk about, so on to the more geeky news. The other day the mail and site were both down due to a major DNS failure. Both the primary and secondary DNS just died completely. Since then I've moved the domain over to Martijn's pro serve servers and they'll now backed up by three other separate servers - so there shouldn't be a DNS failure again ever.
I read a few articles last week, but one of the more interesting ones was about open sourcing windows. The writer makes lots of valid points, but the most interesting for me would be certain algorithms and the way things work. I also found a really neat TV guide that I think I'll use for the Chesterton Online TV guide. The site I'm speaking of is at http://www.pogdesign.co.uk/cat/.
Ronaldo
I've also found the new Brazil shirt with Ronaldo on the back. I'll have to save up so that I can buy one! Next on the list is Thunderbird. If you've ever wanted to backup or move your message store etc, then you've probably wondered the best way to do it. I found this article explaining Mozilla's preferred way of doing that and it works a charm. I moved all users on the lan's directory store over to the network server so that mail would be accessible from wherever they wanted.
WhatNET
This week I also finished the WhatNET site and switched that to being live. There are still some pages to write and more to get done but it'll be worked on with slow progress now. After using Digg regularly for a long while now, I've noticed something. This person realised it too. It seems the lower rated users remain lower than the higher rated users - isn't this what Digg was trying to not be? I'm going to look into it more then write something else about it. Another posted link given to me was cute girls and cats, and they are cute too :D
Sven
Sven is a new project I've been working on. He's an IRC bot that does a whole bunch more. Sven will have more and more features over time incorporated from other bots that I've written previously. He also has AIM connectivity and will send notifications via email, aim and sms. I'll keep you all posted on the development. Cspace
Cspace is a really neat looking project that does this:
CSpace provides a platform for secure, decentralized, user-to-user communication over the internet. The driving idea behind the CSpace platform is to provide a connect(user, service) primitive, similar to the sockets API connect(ip,port). Applications built on top of CSpace can simply invoke connect(user, service) to establish a connection. The CSpace platform will take care of locating the user and creating a secure, nat/firewall friendly connection. Thus the application developers are relieved of the burden of connection establishment, and can focus on the application-level logic!
I really think that will taken off, and it'll be neat to gain Cspace some popularity.
